Documents Required
- Valid Chinese passport: At least 3 months’ validity beyond intended stay. Minimum 1 blank page.
- Chinese Resident ID Card (居民身份证): Both sides, photocopy.
- Completed visa application form: From the Embassy of Japan website. All fields completed.
- Passport photo: 45mm x 45mm, white or light grey background, taken within 6 months, no glasses.
- Household registration (户口本): Complete household registration book. Photocopy all pages.
- Bank statements: 3 to 6 months of personal bank statements. Chinese banks: ICBC, CCB, ABC, BOC, and other major banks are accepted.
- Employment certificate (在职证明): On company letterhead with company stamp, stating your name, position, and salary. Include an approved leave certificate.
- For business owners: Business license (营业执照) copy, and personal income proof.
- Round-trip flight itinerary: Booking reference showing departure from China and return.
- Hotel bookings: Covering the full trip.
- Travel itinerary: Day-by-day plan with named cities and accommodation.
Financial Requirements
Japan does not publish specific minimum balance figures for Chinese applicants. The practical standard based on current embassy processing: bank statements showing a consistent balance sufficient to fund the trip (flights, accommodation, daily spending in Japan) with a meaningful surplus. For a 7- to 10-day trip, balances of CNY 20,000 to 50,000 or more are commonly required for approval, alongside regular salary deposits confirming stable income.
The household registration is a Chinese-specific requirement not applicable to most other nationalities. It must be complete (all pages) as it establishes your family and residential ties to China.
Multiple-Entry Visas for Experienced Chinese Travellers
Japan issues multiple-entry tourist visas (valid for 3 or 5 years, with stays of up to 90 days per visit) to Chinese applicants with a strong travel history to Japan or other developed countries and stable financial documentation. These are particularly valuable for regular Japanese visitors and business travellers. Prior Japan visit history significantly increases the chance of receiving a multiple-entry visa.
Processing Time and Fees
