The Peace Memorial Park, the floating torii gate on Miyajima Island, and why staying overnight is worth considering. Hiroshima is one of the most important cities to visit in Japan. The Peace Memorial Park and Museum are among the most powerful sites in the country, genuinely moving in a way photographs cannot prepare you for.
Combined with a ferry to Miyajima Island to see the floating torii gate, it makes for one of the most memorable days of any Japan trip.
It is 90 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen and 2 hours from Kyoto, making it very doable as a long day trip. Staying overnight gives you both cities without rushing.
Getting to Hiroshima
- From Osaka (Shin-Osaka): 85 to 95 minutes by Hikari Shinkansen. Around 10,790 yen each way. The Nozomi is faster (65 minutes) but not covered by the JR Pass.
- From Kyoto: Around 2 hours by Hikari Shinkansen. Around 11,720 yen each way.
- From Tokyo: Around 4 hours. Better done as an overnight stop than a day trip.
The JR Pass covers the Hikari Shinkansen to Hiroshima. See the JR Pass guide to check your route.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park
The park sits on the delta island closest to where the atomic bomb detonated on August 6, 1945. The Atomic Bomb Dome stands on the northern edge of the ruins of the Industrial Promotion Hall, preserved exactly as it stood after the bombing.
The Peace Memorial Museum is the essential part of any Hiroshima visit. Allow 2 to 3 hours minimum. Entry costs 200 yen. The museum documents rather than lectures on the personal objects, letters, and shadows burned into stone that stay with you. Do not rush it.
Timing: Arrive when the museum opens at 8:30 am to avoid crowds for the first hour. The park is peaceful at any time of day.
Miyajima Island
Take the JR San’yo Line from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi (30 minutes), then the JR Ferry to Miyajima (10 minutes). The JR Pass covers the JR Ferry. Total journey: around 45 minutes from central Hiroshima.
Itsukushima Shrine’s torii gate appears to float in the sea at high tide and stands on exposed sand at low tide. Check tide times before you go and try to see both. The island also has free-roaming deer, the forested slopes of Mount Misen above the shrine, and excellent food along the main street: momiji manju cakes, fresh Hiroshima oysters, and Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki with noodles.
Mount Misen
A ropeway takes you most of the way up (2,000 yen return). A further 30-minute walk reaches the summit with views over the Seto Inland Sea. Worth it on a clear day.
