Golden Week in Early May
Golden Week runs from April 29 (Showa Day) through May 5 (Children’s Day). This is Japan’s most heavily travelled domestic holiday period. Shinkansen seats on popular routes sell out. Theme parks, national parks, and tourist sites see their highest crowds of the year.
From May 6 onward, the change is dramatic. Crowds at major sites drop by 50 to 70% compared to the Golden Week peak. Hotel prices also fall. What Makes May Special
Wisteria Season
Japan’s wisteria (fuji) blooms in late April to May. Kawachi Wisteria Garden in Fukuoka and Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi are the most famous locations. The cascading purple flower tunnels are spectacular and far less crowded than cherry blossom sites.
New Green Leaves (Shin Midori)
The fresh green leaves that emerge after the cherry blossoms are part of the Japanese seasonal concept (shin midori or midori no kisetsu). The temples of Kyoto in early May, with their fresh maple leaves, have a completely different, quieter beauty from the blossom season. Worth a visit, specifically in May.
Outdoor Activities
