Feels very similar to August. Tokyo averages 28 to 31 degrees Celsius with high humidity. Osaka is comparable. Hokkaido is already beginning to cool (20-25 degrees in early September). Mid-September (15 to 22)
A noticeable shift across most of Honshu. Daily highs drop to 25-28 degrees in Tokyo and Osaka. Humidity begins to ease. Evenings become genuinely comfortable for the first time since May. This is when September starts to feel like a good time to visit.
Late September (23 to 30)

Hokkaido in September
Hokkaido runs 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Honshu throughout September. Sapporo averages 18 to 22 degrees in early September, dropping to 12 to 16 degrees by late September. Typhoon Season in September
September is statistically the peak typhoon month for Japan. Most typhoons in the Pacific track north through the Philippine Sea and approach Japan from the southwest in August and September. The key facts:
- Not every week in September has a typhoon. Many trips to Japan in September are completely unaffected.
- Most typhoons bring heavy rain and strong winds for 12 to 24 hours, then pass. Shinkansen services may be suspended during severe typhoons.
- The Pacific coast (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) faces a higher typhoon risk than Hokkaido and the Japan Sea coast.

Late September in Kyoto and Osaka (from around September 20 onward) offers comfortable temperatures and lower crowds than the preceding summer months. The mountain hiking season in Nagano and Gifu is excellent in September. Kamikochi Alpine Valley is open until mid-November. Temperatures at altitude are already comfortable, and the late-season light is excellent for photography.
