What to Do in Kumamoto
Kumamoto Castle
One of Japan’s three great castles, alongside Himeji and Matsumoto. The 2016 earthquakes caused significant damage, and the restoration of the main keep is not expected to be completed until 2037. However, the castle grounds are open,n and viewing of the ongoing stone wall restoration work is itself an extraordinary experience in Japanese historic preservation. The restored Uto-yagura turret and some sections of the castle are accessible—entry: 800 yen. Open 8:30 am to 5:30 pm (April to October), 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (November to March).
Suizenji Jojuen Garden
A 17th-century feudal garden created for the Hosokawa clan, famous for its miniature landscape recreating the 53 stations of the Tokaido road between Tokyo and Kyoto. The central lake, the Mount Fuji-shaped hill, and the surrounding garden design are excellent examples of Edo-period garden aesthetics. Entry: 400 yen. 15 minutes from Kumamoto Station by tram.
Mount Aso Day Trip
Mount Aso’s central crater (Nakadake) is one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes, 1.5 hours from Kumamoto by JR train and ropeway. The ropeway gives access to the crater rim when active volcanic gas levels permit. The vast caldera rim drive offers panoramic views across the volcanic landscape. Access conditions change with volcanic activity; check the Japan Meteorological Agency’s status before visiting.
What to Eat in Kumamoto
Basashi (raw horse meat sashimi) is Kumamoto’s most famous and most distinctive food. Served in thin slices with ginger and soy sauce, it has a mild, slightly sweet flavour with a lean texture.
