Kyoto to Hiroshima 2026: Shinkansen and All Options

Hiroshima is 1 hour and 40 minutes from Kyoto by Hikari Shinkansen. JR Pass is fully valid. Hiroshima can be a day trip from Kyoto or a dedicated stop on the way to Osaka. Here is the full guide.

Hiroshima sits about 340 kilometres west of Kyoto on the Sanyo Shinkansen line. From Kyoto, the Shinkansen makes it a very practical day trip or one-way stop en route to Osaka or Fukuoka. The combination of the Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima Island’s floating torii gate makes Hiroshima one of the most compelling stops on the Japan Golden Route extension.

Option 1: Hikari Shinkansen from Kyoto Station (Recommended)

Step-by-step directions

  • Step 1: From JR Kyoto Station, board the Hikari Shinkansen westbound toward Hiroshima, Hakata direction. The Shinkansen platforms are in the central section of Kyoto Station.
  • Step 2: Ride to Hiroshima Station. Journey time: about 1 hour 40 minutes on the Hikari.
  • Step 3: From Hiroshima Station, Peace Memorial Park is 15 minutes by tram (lines 1 or 2, 220 yen) or 10 minutes by taxi (approximately 1,500 yen).

Time: 1 hour 40 minutes.

Cost: Around 11,000 yen standard class, or free with JR Pass. Reserve at the green window.

Frequency: Multiple Hikari departures per hour throughout the day.

Nozomi vs Hikari: The Nozomi Shinkansen is about 20 minutes faster than Hikari but is NOT covered by the JR Pass. Take the Hikari with your pass. Without a JR Pass, consider the Nozomi if speed is the priority.

Option 2: Highway Bus (Budget)

Highway buses from Kyoto Station or central Kyoto to Hiroshima Bus Center take about 3.5 to 4 hours and cost approximately 4,000 to 6,000 yen. A significant time investment compared to the Shinkansen, but meaningfully cheaper.

Hiroshima Day Trip vs Overnight

A day trip from Kyoto is possible: leave by 8 am, arrive in Hiroshima by 9:40 am, spend 5 to 6 hours (Peace Memorial Museum, A-Bomb Dome, Miyajima if rushed), return to Kyoto by 6 pm. It is tight. An overnight in Hiroshima allows a more relaxed pace for both the city and Miyajima Island, and the evening light on the floating torii is exceptional.

What to See in Hiroshima

Peace Memorial Park and Museum (200 yen): The park occupies the ground zero island between two rivers. The A-Bomb Dome, the Peace Bell, the Memorial Cenotaph, and the Flame of Peace are arranged in a line toward the dome. The Peace Memorial Museum is essential for survivor testimonies, artifacts, photographs, and the context of August 6, 1945. Allow a minimum of 2 to 3 hours for the museum and park together.

Miyajima Island: The iconic Itsukushima Shrine and its floating torii gate are 30 minutes from Hiroshima by JR and JR ferry. The JR San’yo Line from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi (25 minutes, JR Pass valid), then the JR ferry to the island (10 minutes, JR Pass covers the ferry). At low tide,e you can walk to the torii base; at high tide,e it floats above the water. The island also has free-roaming deer, a five-story pagoda, and forested trails to the mountain summit.

Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki: Distinct from Osaka-style, the Hiroshima version layers noodles, vegetables, egg, and batter separately rather than mixing them. Okonomimura (a building with multiple specialized restaurants) in central Hiroshima is the best place to try it. 800 to 1,500 yen per portion.

Miyajima Island: A Half-Day Addition. Most travellers to Hiroshima combine a visit to Hiroshima with a trip to Miyajima Island. From Hiroshima Station, the JR San’yo Line to Miyajimaguchi Station takes 27 minutes (JR Pass valid), and the JR ferry to the island takes 10 minutes (JR Pass covers the ferry). The iconic floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine is one of Japan’s three views (nihon sankei) alongside Matsushima and Amanohashidate. At high tide,e the gate appears to float; at low tide,e you can walk to its base.

Hiroshima food: Beyond okonomiyaki, Hiroshima has excellent seafood driven by proximity to the Seto Inland Sea. Anago (conger eel) from Miyajima is a local specialty, either as donburi (eel over rice, around 2,000 yen) or as pressed oshi-zushi. Hiroshima oysters are Japan’s largest by volume production and are served grilled, fried (kaki-furai), or raw at restaurants throughout the city. Budget 800-1,500 yen per person for a solid Hiroshima meal.

Kyoto-Hiroshima itinerary note: Hiroshima works well as a day trip from Kyoto or as a stop en route from Kyoto to Fukuoka. The logical structure: Shinkansen from Kyoto to Hiroshima in the morning; Peace Memorial Museum and park; Miyajima in the afternoon; either return to Kyoto or continue west to Fukuoka by Shinkansen.
