The N’EX is JR’s dedicated airport express from Narita to central Tokyo. Here is how it works, how to book, what it costs, and when it makes sense versus the alternatives.
JR East operates the Narita Express (N’EX), which runs directly from Narita Airport Terminals 1, 2, and 3 to Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Yokohama, depending on the service. It is the most recognizable Narita transfer option and is particularly well-suited for JR Pass holders, for whom it is completely free.

- Cost: 3,070 yen one way (standard class)

Routes and Destinations
N’EX Servicare is split at Ofuna into two branches:
- Tokyo Branch: Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro
- Yokohama Branch: Yokohama
Not all N’EX services stop at all stations. Check your service carefully when boarding. The destination and stopping pattern are displayed on the departure boards and on the side of the train.
Tourist Round-Trip Pass
JR East sells a tourist N’EX Tokyo Return Ticket for 5,000 yen, which includes one return journey between Narita and any N’EX station in the Tokyo Metro area and is valid for 14 days. Good value if you are returning to Narita for your departure flight. Available at Narita airport JR counters with a foreign passport.
How to Buy
- JR ticket counter: In the arrivals hall at all three Narita terminals. Staff speak English. Show your destination.
- Ticket machine: English interface available. Select N’EX from the menu.
- JR Pass holders: Present your pass and foreign passport at the JR counter to reserve a free seat.
- Online: JR East’s overseas booking website allows advance purchase, but walk-up tickets are always available.
