November is one of Osaka’s finest months. Comfortable temperatures, brilliant autumn foliage at Minoo Park and Osaka Castle, and the city’s food culture at full energy with the summer heat gone. Here is what to do and what to expect.
Quick answer: The best things to do in Osaka in November are the autumn foliage hike at Minoo Park (30 minutes north, peak mid-November, free entry), Osaka Castle’s autumn colours, the Tenjin-san flea market at Osaka Temmangu Shrine on November 25, and Dotonbori and Kuromon Market at their most pleasant in the cool weather. Book accommodation 4 to 6 weeks ahead as November is peak Kansai season.
Osaka Weather in November
November brings a welcome shift from Osaka’s intense summer and warm autumn. Early November averages 18 to 20 degrees Celsius, dropping to 12 to 15 degrees by late November. Clear, crisp days are typical. Evening temperatures drop noticeably, and a light jacket is needed from mid-month. The comfortable temperatures make November ideal for Osaka’s walkable street food culture: Dotonbori, Kuromon Market, and the Shinsekai area are all at their most pleasant when you’re not sweating through them.
Minoo Park Autumn Foliage
The finest autumn foliage accessible from Osaka. Minoo Park (箕面公園) is a national park 30 minutes north of Osaka by the Hankyu Minoo Line from Umeda. A 2.7-kilometre paved path winds along the Minoo River through maple-covered valley walls to the 33-metre Minoo Waterfall. In mid-November, the maples turn vivid red and orange, reflected in the river below.
The park path is lined with food stalls selling momiji-no-tempura (deep-fried maple leaf tempura, a Minoo specialty that is literally a fried maple leaf in batter, surprisingly good), fresh yuba tofu, and seasonal grilled foods. Free entry to the park, 30-minute walk to the waterfall from the station. Best visited on a weekday morning to avoid the weekend crowds.
Osaka Castle Autumn Colours
The stone walls and moat of Osaka Castle have mature ginkgo and cherry trees in the outer and inner bailey areas that turn golden and sometimes red in November. The Nishi-no-maru Garden within the castle complex (entry 200 yen) has the densest foliage concentration. The combination of the white castle tower rising above the autumn colours and the reflection in the moat makes this one of Osaka’s most photogenic November scenes. Visit on a clear day in the 9 am to 11 am window for the best light.
Tenjin-san Flea Market – November 25
Osaka Temmangu Shrine holds a monthly flea market on the 25th of each month (the shrine’s regular market day, tied to the birthday of Sugawara no Michizane). Antiques, vintage clothing, ceramics, old books, and general second-hand goods fill the shrine grounds and surrounding lanes. The November 25 market is one of the more popular months as the autumn weather brings out more vendors and visitors. Free to enter, items priced individually by vendors.
Dotonbori and the Food Culture in November
Osaka’s food identity is most enjoyable in November when the summer humidity is gone. The Dotonbori evening walk, takoyaki from a street vendor, okonomiyaki at a sit-down restaurant, and late-night ramen at Kinryu is the essential Osaka experience and considerably more pleasant at 15 degrees than at 32 degrees.
Kuromon Market in November is excellent for seasonal produce alongside the year-round fresh seafood. Autumn vegetables, matsutake mushrooms (when available at the market, 5,000 to 30,000 yen per mushroom, depending on grade), sweet persimmons, and seasonal squash add a distinct November character to the Kuromon stalls.
Kobe Day Trip in November
Kobe is 25 minutes west of Osaka by JR (see the Osaka-to-Kobe route). November in Kobe adds foliage dimension: the Kitano-cho foreign settlement district’s European architecture is surrounded by mature deciduous trees that colour well in mid-November. The Rokko (Mt Rokko, 931 metres above the port) is accessible by ropeway from the Rokko Cable Car station and offers panoramic views of the autumn-coloured hillside and Osaka Bay below. The Arima Onsen hot spring town on the far side of Rokko is particularly atmospheric in November.
