Tenjin Matsuri: One of Japan’s Three Great Festivals
Tenjin Matsuri, held on July 24 and 25, is the festival of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine and one of Japan’s three greatest traditional festivals (alongside Gion Matsuri in Kyoto and Kanda Matsuri in Tokyo). The two-day festival culminates on the evening of July 25 with a massive boat procession of approximately 100 decorated vessels on the Okawa River, illuminated by 5,000 fireworks overhead. The combination of the torchlit boats, the fireworks reflection in the river, and the yukata-clad crowds on the bridges makes this one of the finest single nights in Japan’s festival calendar.
