From Osaka, the Shinkansen makes Hiroshima easily accessible for a day trip, though an overnight allows Miyajima in the evening light and a more complete Hiroshima experience.
Option 1: Hikari Shinkansen (Recommended)
The Hikari Shinkansen stops at Hiroshima and is fully covered by the JR Pass. The Nozomi (faster) also serves this route, but it is NOT JR Pass valid.
Step-by-step directions
- Step 1: From Shin-Osaka Station (not Osaka Station; the Shinkansen uses Shin-Osaka), board the Hikari Shinkansen westbound toward Hiroshima, Hakata, or Kokura.
- Step 2: Ride to Hiroshima Station. Journey time: about 1 hour 10 minutes on the Hikari.
- Step 3: From Hiroshima Station, the Peace Memorial Park is about 15 minutes by tram (lines 1 or 2, 220 yen). Taxis take 10 minutes and cost approximately 1,500 yen.
Time: 1 hour 10 minutes, Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima.
Cost: Around 10,440 yen standard class, or free with JR Pass. Reserve seats at the green window.
Frequency: Multiple Hikari departures per hour throughout the day. Nozomi (NOT JR Pass valid) is faster at about 45 minutes.
JR Pass: Take the Hikari, not the Nozomi. The Hikari is only slightly slower (about 25 minutes longer than Nozomi for this route) and is fully covered by the pass. The Nozomi requires paying the full supplement even with a JR Pass.
Option 2: Highway Bus (Budget Option)
Highway buses run between Osaka (Hankyu Bus Terminal, Namba OCAT) and Hiroshima Bus Center. Journey time: about 3 to 3.5 hours. Cost: approximately 3,50- 5,000 yen. Significantly cheaper than the Shinkansen but takes 2 to 2.5 hours more each way.
What to See in Hiroshima
Peace Memorial Park and Museum (entry: 200 yen): The Peace Memorial Park is on the ground-zero island between two rivers. The A-Bomb Dome (preserved ruins of the Industrial Promotion Hall, the closest building to survive the blast) stands at the north end. The Peace Memorial Museum covers the history of the bombing, survivor testimonies, and the ongoing peace movement. The museum is sobering and important. Allow at least 2 hours for the museum alone.
Miyajima Island (JR ferry 200 yen or included with JR Pass): Itsukushima Shrine’s famous floating torii gate, which appears to float at high tide, is one of Japan’s most photographed images. The island also has wild deer, a five-story pagoda, forested mountain hiking, and excellent Hiroshima-style oysters. The JR ferry from Miyajimaguchi (reached by JR San’yo Line from Hiroshima Station) is covered by the JR Pass. Round trip with time on the island: allow 3-4 hours.
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki: Hiroshima’s signature dish is a layered version of the Japanese savoury pancake, distinct from the mixed Osaka style. Multiple floors of the Okonomimura building in central Hiroshima have specialized okonomiyaki restaurants. Budget 800 to 1,500 yen per person.
Miyajima Island and Hiroshima Day Trip from Osaka
Miyajima Island is an easy trip from Hiroshima Station, taking about 30 to 40 minutes by JR train and ferry. Take the JR San’yo Line to Miyajimaguchi Station, then the JR ferry to the island. The JR Pass covers both.
The island’s main attraction is Itsukushima Shrine’s floating torii gate, which appears to float at high tide. At low tide, you can walk across the exposed seafloor to reach its base. Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours visiting the shrine, five-story pagoda, village street, wild deer, and oyster stalls along the waterfront.
From Osaka, the Hikari Shinkansen takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima and is covered by the JR Pass. The faster Nozomi takes about 45 minutes, but it is not covered.
