The JR Chuo Line runs directly from Tokyo Station to Shinjuku in 14 minutes. It is the fastest and most convenient route between the two most important stations in central Tokyo.
Tokyo Station and Shinjuku are the two largest stations in Tokyo, and both are critical transport hubs. Tokyo Station handles the Shinkansen. Shinjuku handles the Yamanote Line, private railways to Hakone and western Tokyo, and a massive commercial area. Moving between them efficiently is one of the most common questions about Tokyo transport.

Option 1: JR Chuo Line (Recommended)
- Platform: JR Chuo Line platforms at Tokyo Station are on the upper level, above the main concourse. Follow the orange Chuo Line signs.
- Service: Take the Chuo Special Rapid (中央線快速, orange train). These stop at Kanda, Ochanomizu, Yotsuya, and Shinjuku.
- Journey time: 14 minutes to Shinjuku
- Cost: 220 yen with Suica
- Frequency: Every 4 to 6 minutes during peak hours
This is the most used commuter connection between the two stations. Straightforward, fast, and inexpensive.
Option 2: Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line
The Marunouchi Line (red) runs from Tokyo Station (the Metro station is adjacent to the JR station) west through Shinjuku. Journey time is about 25 minutes, stopping at Ginza, Akasaka-Mitsuke, and multiple intermediate stations. Costs around 210 yen. Useful if you have a specific stop en route,e but slower than the JR Chuo for the direct journey.
Option 3: Taxi
Taxis from Tokyo Station to Shinjuku take 20 to 35 minutes in normal traffic and cost approximately 2,000 to 3,500 yen. The JR Chuo is significantly faster and cheaper. Taxis are mainly useful for late-night travel when train frequency drops.
