Tokyo to Hiroshima by Shinkansen is one of Japan’s great rail journeys. Here are all the options, honestly compared, with costs, timelines, and what to expect at each step.
Hiroshima is 730 kilometres from Tokyo, making it the longest single Shinkansen leg most Japanese itinerary travellers make. The journey is entirely worthwhile. The Peace Memorial Museum and Miyajima Island together make for what many visitors consider the most important day of their trip to Japan. Getting there efficiently matters.
Quick answer: Most travelers: Hikari Shinkansen, 4 hours, 18,440 yen, JR Pass valid. Budget: overnight highway bus from Shinjuku, 8 to 9 hours, around 6,000 yen. Nozomi Shinkansen (fastest, 3 hours 45 min) is NOT covered by JR Pass and costs the same as Hikari.
Option 1: Shinkansen (Recommended)
Hikari (JR Pass Valid)
- Journey time: About 4 hours from Tokyo Station to Hiroshima Station
- Cost: 18,440 yen one way
- JR Pass: Fully covered. Reserve a free seat at the JR counter.
- Stops: Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Shin-Kobe, Fukuyama, Hiroshima
The Hikari is the practical choice for JR Pass holders and the standard recommendation. The 4-hour journey passes through the Tokaido corridor and offers views of Mount Fuji on the right side of the train (seats C and D) between Shin-Fuji and Shizuoka stations when heading west.
Nozomi (Faster, Not JR Pass)
- Journey time: About 3 hours 45 minutes
- Cost: 18,440 yen – same price as Hikari
- JR Pass: NOT covered
The Nozomi saves about 15 minutes compared to the Hikari on the Tokyo-Hiroshima run. Since the price is identical and the time saving is minimal, Hikari is almost always the right choice. The only exception: JR Pass holders who have reserved a Hikari seat but miss the train may take the next Nozomi by paying the difference.
Option 2: Overnight Highway Bus (Budget)
- Departure: Shinjuku Bus Terminal (Busta Shinjuku)
- Arrival: Hiroshima Bus Center or Hiroshima Station
- Journey time: About 8 to 9 hours overnight
- Cost: Around 5,000 to 8,000 yen, depending on seat type and booking timing
- Operators: Willer Express, JR Highway Bus, Chugoku JR Bus
The overnight bus saves on both transportation costs and the cost of a night’s accommodation. If you were going to pay 4,000 to 6,000 yen for a hostel bed, the bus effectively pays for itself. Book at willerexpress.com or at the Busta Shinjuku counter. Premium seats (2-across with footrest and dividers) are worth the 1,000 to 2,000 yen premium for a marginally better sleep.
Option 3: Domestic Flight
- Route: Tokyo Haneda (HND) to Hiroshima Airport
- Flight time: About 1 hour 20 minutes
- Airport transfer to Hiroshima City: Hiroshima Airport is 45 kilometres from the city centre. The airport bus takes about 45 minutes and costs 1,340 yen.
- Total door-to-door: About 3.5 to 4 hours from central Tokyo to central Hiroshima
- Cost: From 8,000 to 20,000 yen on budget carriers, higher on full-service airlines
Flying is comparable to the Hikari Shinkansen in door-to-door time and cheaper on budget carriers, but Hiroshima Airport’s distance from the city adds complexity. The Shinkansen Experience Itself
The Tokyo-to-Hiroshima Hikari journey is genuinely worth the experience beyond the destination. Leaving Tokyo, the train crosses the flat Kanto plain before entering the mountains and coastal sections of the Tokaido. Mount Fuji appears for a 30-second window (sit on the right side, in seats C and D) if the weather is clear. The train then descends through Kyoto’s outskirts and the Osaka urban plain before the narrowing Seto Inland Sea coast approaching Hiroshima.
Buy an ekiben (train station lunch box) at Tokyo Station’s Daimaru food hall basement before boarding. Eating a high-quality Japanese lunch box on the Shinkansen is one of travel’s finer modest pleasures.
Combining Tokyo with Hiroshima, Kyoto, and Osaka
