The distance from central Tokyo (Tokyo Station) to USJ is approximately 560 kilometres, requiring a Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka, followed by a local train to Universal City Station.
The Route: Tokyo to USJ Step by Step
Step 1: Tokyo Station (or Shin-Yokohama) to Shin-Osaka by Shinkansen.
- Nozomi (fastest, JR Pass NOT valid): About 2 hours 15 minutes. 14,720 yen.
- Hikari (JR Pass valid): About 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours. Covered by JR Pass.
- Kodama (JR Pass valid, all stops): About 3 hours 45 minutes.
Step 2: Shin-Osaka to Osaka Station by JR Kyoto Line or Osaka Loop Line. 4 minutes, 160 yen, JR Pass valid.

Day Trip from Tokyo: Is It Worth It?
A USJ day trip from Tokyo is technically possible, but it makes for a very long day. Departing Tokyo Station at 7 am, arriving at USJ around 9:30 am, spending 8 hours in the park, and returning by the last reasonable Shinkansen gets you back to Tokyo around midnight. Total Shinkansen cost without JR Pass: approximately 30,000 yen; round trip with JR Pass: covered.
The more sensible approach for visitors already on a Japan itinerary: stay overnight in Osaka (or Kyoto, 15 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen) before or after USJ. From Namba/central Osaka: Take the Hanshin Namba Line to Nishi-Kujo, transfer to the JR Sakurajima Line to Universal City. About 20 minutes total, a faster option from southern Osaka than going via Osaka Station.
