The Tsukiji Outer Market in central Tokyo remains an excellent food destination despite the wholesale market’s move to Toyosu. The outer market’s restaurants and food stalls still sell some of the finest fresh sushi, tamagoyaki, and grilled seafood in Tokyo. Here is the complete guide.
In 2018, the inner wholesale fish auction moved to Toyosu Market across Tokyo Bay. The Tsukiji Outer Market, the surrounding block of retail shops and small restaurants, remained at its original Tsukiji location and continues to operate daily. For food travellers, the outer market remains one of Tokyo’s most rewarding destinations.
Getting to Tsukiji Outer Market
Tsukiji Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line (silver H) is the most direct access. Exit 1 leads directly to the outer market. Alternatively, Tsukijishijo Station on the Toei Oedo Line is even closer, with Exit A1 at the edge of the market. From central Tokyo:
- From Ginza: Walk about 10 minutes south along Harumi-dori or take the Hibiya Line 1 stop to Tsukiji.
- From Shimbashi: Walk about 15 minutes east or take the Toei Oedo Line to Tsukijishijo.
What to Eat at Tsukiji Outer Market
Sushi and Sashimi
The outer market has numerous sushi restaurants ranging from counter-only specialists to small dining rooms. The standard for a Tsukiji sushi breakfast or lunch: a tuna (maguro) tasting set covering chu-toro (medium fatty tuna), o-toro (premium fatty tuna), and akami (lean tuna) alongside tamago-yaki and ikura (salmon roe). Budget 1,500 to 4,000 yen per person for a quality 5 to 8-piece set. The small counter restaurants along the main outer market lanes fill quickly from 99 am.
Tamagoyaki (卵焼き) – Japanese Sweet Omelette
Tsukiji’s outer market is famous for its thick, slightly sweet Japanese rolled omelette cooked fresh on rectangular griddles. Multiple vendors compete on this item, and freshly cooked tamagoyaki (eaten on a skewer while walking) is a definitive Tsukiji experience. Budget 30- 600 yen per stick.
Grilled Scallops and Seafood Skewers
Multiple street stalls grill giant scallops and other shellfish to order at the market entrance areas. A giant grilled scallop with butter and soy sauce: 500 to 800 yen. Sea urchin (uni) on rice served in small cups: 500 to 1,200 yen depending on the grade.
Japanese Breakfast Sets
Several sit-down restaurants in the outer market serve the classic Japanese breakfast: grilled fish (saba mackerel or salmon), rice, miso soup, pickles, and a soft-boiled egg. 800 to 1,500 yen for a complete set.
When to Visit
The outer market is most active from 9 am to 12 pm. Many stalls sell out of premium items by early afternoon. The best experience is arriving at 9 am, working through the market lanes, and having lunch before 12 pm. The market is generally open every day except Sundays, Wednesdays, and market holidays. Confirm the schedule at the Tsukiji Outer Market website before visiting.
