Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka is one of the most visited theme parks in the world and home to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World. Here is the complete guide to tickets, the Express Pass, and structuring the day.
USJ opened in Osaka in 2001 and has grown into one of Asia’s premier theme parks. Super Nintendo World, which opened in 2021, brought the park to a new level of immersive theming. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which opened in 2014, remains one of the most faithfully realized theme park recreations of a fictional world.
Getting to USJ
From Osaka: JR Sakurajima Line (Yumesaki Line) from JR Osaka Station to Universal City Station. About 12 minutes, 180 yen, JR Pass valid. The most common route. Trains run every few minutes during park hours.
From Kyoto: JR Kyoto Line from Kyoto Station to Osaka Station (28 minutes, JR Pass valid), then the Sakurajima Line as above. It takes about 45 minutes from Kyoto Station.
From Tokyo: Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Shin-Osaka (2 hours 30 minutes, JR Pass valid with Hikari), then JR Osaka Loop Line to Osaka Station, then Sakurajima Line. Total about 3 hours. A day trip from Tokyo is technically possible, but very long. An overnight in Osaka makes more sense.
Tickets
Standard 1-Day Pass: Approximately 9,400 to 10,400 yen for adults, 6,300 to 7,100 yen for children (ages 4 to 11). Prices vary by date, with higher prices on peak days. Check the USJ official website or authorized resellers for current pricing.
Buy in advance: USJ sells out on popular days, particularly during Japanese school holidays (Golden Week, summer, New Year), weekends, and during special events. Book through the official USJ website (usj.co.jp) or authorized resellers. Japanese booking platforms (Klook, KKday) offer the same tickets and sometimes easier English navigation.
Express Pass
The Express Pass allows you to skip the main queue at designated attractions. Multiple tiers exist with different combinations of attractions covered. The most useful Express Pass combinations cover: Hollywood Dream, The Flying Dinosaur, The Wizarding World (Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey), and Super Nintendo World entry reservation.
Price: The Express Pass costs an additional 4,800 to 14,800 yen, depending on the tier and the date. Higher demand days have higher Express Pass prices. On peak day,s the Express Pass essentially pays for itself in time saved.
Super Nintendo World entry: Even without an Express Pass, entry requires a timed area reservation (Area Reservation) obtained via the USJ app upon arrival. Get this as soon as you enter the park, as reservations fill quickly. Express Pass 7 and higher includes guaranteed entry to Super Nintendo World without a reservation.
The Must-Do Attractions
Super Nintendo World: The most technically impressive area in any theme park in Japan. Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge is the centrepiece (ride requires an Express Pass or a long queue). The Power-Up Band interactive experience is throughout the area. Yoshi’s Adventure is a gentler family ride.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Hogsmeade village, Hogwarts Castle, and Butterbeer. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey inside the castle is the signature ride. The details of the physical environment are the main attraction regardless of the ride.
Hollywood Dream: A high-speed roller coaster with a backward option (Backdrop). One of the best coasters in Japan.
The Flying Dinosaur: A wing coaster over the park with outstanding aerials. The longest queue is in the park on most days.
Strategy
Arrive at opening: Doors open 15 to 30 minutes before the listed park opens on busy days. Sprint directly to Super Nintendo World for the Area Reservation or to The Flying Dinosaur before the queue builds.
Weekday vs weekend: Weekdays outside Japanese school holidays are substantially less crowded. A Monday or Tuesday visit in mid-September or mid-October is the easiest day to do the major attractions without an Express Pass.
