Incheon International Airport has two main public transport options for reaching central Seoul: the AREX (Airport Railroad Express) and the Airport Limousine Bus network. Both work well. The right choice depends on your destination in Seoul, how much luggage you have, and how much the price difference matters to you.
The AREX -Speed and Reliability
AREX Express: 43 minutes to Seoul Station. 9,500 won. Non-stop. No traffic risk. Runs every 30 minutes.
AREX All-Stop: 66 minutes to Seoul Station with intermediate stops including Hongik University (Hongdae). 4,950 won. Runs every 6 to 12 minutes.
The AREX’s main advantages are speed, frequency, and complete immunity to Seoul’s traffic. The journey time is guaranteed regardless of the time of day. The main limitation: AREX only stops at specific stations, Seoul Station, Hongik University, and a few others. From those stations, you may need a subway connection to reach your hotel.
The Airport Limousine Bus – Direct to More Areas
Over 20 bus routes run from Incheon to different parts of Seoul, Myeongdong, Gangnam, Hongdae, Itaewon, Jamsil, and more. Many routes stop directly outside major hotels.
Cost: 10,000-17,000 won, depending on the route.
Journey time: 70 to 110 minutes in normal traffic. Can extend to 2 hours during rush hour on Han River bridge crossings.
The bus’s main advantage is direct delivery to your neighbourhood without a subway transfer—the main risk: traffic. Seoul’s Han River crossings are heavily congested during peak hours (7 to 9 am and 5 to 8pm). If your flight arrives during rush hour, factor in extra time.
Which to Choose by Destination
Hongdae: AREX All-Stop wins direct stop at Hongik University, 66 minutes, 4,950 won.
Myeongdong / City Hall / Seoul Station: AREX Express wins 43 minutes, then one or two subway stops.
Gangnam: Airport Limousine Bus often offers direct routes to Gangnam without transfers, avoiding the subway complexity south of the river.
Itaewon / Yongsan: AREX Express to Seoul Station, then subway line 1 south, or Limousine Bus route 6020.
Jamsil / Lotte World: Airport Limousine Bus route 6006 or 6008 is more direct than any AREX combination.
With very heavy luggage, the bus wins; luggage goes in the hold, no escalator navigation.
Tight connection or late arrival: AREX wins guaranteed timing.
Combined Approach
Many experienced Korean travellers use the AREX Express to Seoul Station (the fastest, most reliable option) and then take a taxi for the final kilometre to their hotel, which is especially useful if the hotel is not directly on a subway line. The total cost is still often cheaper than a full-fare airport taxi.
