Busan is a year-round destination, but the character changes significantly by season. Here is what each month looks like and when to go based on your priorities.
The beach shapes Busan’s seasonal appeal, the film festival, the cherry blossoms on the hillsides, and the seafood calendar. The city rewards visits in every season, but the reasons to differ enough that timing genuinely matters.
Spring (March to May)
Cherry Blossom Season (Late March to Early April)
Busan’s cherry blossom season is less internationally known than Seoul’s or Kyoto’s, and for that reason, it is more pleasant to experience. The hillsides of Gamcheon Culture Village, the streets above Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, and the banks of the Nakdong River are all in full bloom. Jinhae (now part of Changwon city, 50 minutes from Busan) is one of Korea’s most spectacular cherry blossom destinations, particularly the Gyeonghwa Station railway crossing surrounded by blossom arches.
Verdict: Excellent and underrated. Much more manageable than Seoul or Kyoto at the same time.

Post-cherry blossom, pre-summer heat. Comfortable temperatures of 15 to 22 degrees. The beginning of the hiking season in the surrounding mountains. Hotel prices are at normal levels.
Verdict: Very good. One of the best overall months.
Summer (June to August)
Beach Season
Haeundae and Gwangalli beaches are at full capacity from mid-July through August. This is Busan’s most famous and most crowded season. Hotel prices in beach areas spike significantly. The Busan Sea Festival runs throughout August with beach events and fireworks.
The sea temperature is genuinely warm and swimmable from mid-July. The energy at Haeundae on a clear summer evening, with the beach lit by the hotels and the crowds, is genuinely exciting on a first visit.
Verdict: Best for beach culture and summer energy. Most expensive and most crowded. Book accommodation 4 to 6 weeks ahead for Haeundae and Gwangalli.
Autumn (September to November)
October – Best Month to Visit Busan
The finest month. Post-summer heat and humidity, pre-winter chill, and comfortable temperatures of 15 to 24 degrees. The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) runs annually in October (typically the first two weeks), bringing South Korean and international cinema to venues across the city. The BIFF Square and Haeundae area host screenings, celebrity appearances, and a film-culture atmosphere that make October genuinely different from any other month in Busan.
Verdict: Highest overall recommendation. Perfect weather plus the BIFF cultural event.
November
Autumn foliage in the mountain parks surrounding Busan. Geumjeongsan Fortress and the hills above Haedong Yonggungsa Temple have good colour. Temperatures drop to 8-18 degrees. Hotels return to off-season pricing.
Verdict: Excellent. Quieter than October but still good weather.
Winter (December to February)
Busan winters are significantly milder than Seoul’s due to the southern coastal location. Average winter temperatures of 5 to 12 degrees are cold but rarely freezing. Haeundae beach in winter has a completely different character: almost deserted, the sea pewter grey, the surrounding hotels lit up at night without the crowds. Some visitors find this more beautiful than the summer version.
The Haeundae Sand Festival and winter illuminations run through December. Hotel prices are at their annual low.
Verdict: Good for budget travellers. The winter coast character of Busan is genuinely distinct and worth experiencing.
