Cheonggyecheon is a 5.8-kilometre restored urban stream that flows through the heart of central Seoul from the Cheonggye Plaza waterfall near City Hall to the Sinseol-dong area in the east. The below-street-level walkway is one of Seoul’s most pleasant free walks.
The Cheonggyecheon Stream was covered with a highway from the 1950s to the 1990s. The restoration project, completed in 2005, removed the elevated expressway and revealed the buried stream beneath, creating a public green space that has become one of Seoul’s most-used outdoor areas. The project is frequently cited in urban planning circles as a successful example of highway removal.
Getting There
The walk starts at Cheonggye Plaza near City Hall Station (Lines 1 and 2). Exit 4 from City Hall Station leads to the plaza and the spiral sculpture at the stream head in about 5 minutes. The plaza is also accessible from Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2) Exit 2.
Walking the Stream
The stream walkway runs 5.8 kilometres from the Cheonggye Plaza to the Sinseol-dong area. Most visitors walk a portion rather than the full length. The most popular section is the western stretch from Cheonggye Plaza to the Ogansu Bridge area (about 2 kilometres), which has the most mural art, stone reliefs, and seasonal flower installations.
The path is below street level, which provides shade and a degree of isolation from city noise. Stepping stones cross the water at several points. The sound of flowing water and the canyon’s narrowness between the road walls create a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere for a stream in the center of a city of 10 million.
Art Installations
The stream has several permanent and seasonal art installations along its banks. The Cheonggyecheon Spring (Springtime) mural at the Cheonggye 5-ga section is a large ceramic-tile mural depicting historical scenes from Korean history. Several bridges have LED lighting that reflects on the water at night. The most impressive night view is in winter, when the Lantern Festival (held in November) lights the stream with illuminated lanterns.
Seasonal Events
Spring (April to May): Flower installations along the banks and in the plaza. The Cheonggyecheon Spring Festival adds pop-up markets and performances.
Summer (June to August): The stream is a cool escape from Seoul’s heat. The water is particularly refreshing for wading at the stepping stone crossings. Popular evening destination. Combine with Seoul in August planning.

The Cheonggyecheon runs through the heart of central Seoul, making it convenient to combine with nearby attractions. The Dongdaemun Design Plaza is at the eastern end. The Gwangjang Market is accessible from the Euljiro area. The Myeongdong Shopping Guide district is about a 10-minute walk south of the western end.
