The Dongdaemun Design Plaza is the most architecturally distinctive building in Seoul and the anchor of the Dongdaemun fashion and design district. The building itself, the museums inside, the outdoor plaza, and the night market make it one of the most versatile destinations in the city.
The DDP was designed by Zaha Hadid and opened in 2014. The 86,574-square-metre building has no straight lines. Its surface is covered in 45,133 aluminum panels in a free-form curved shell that has been described as a landscape rather than a building. It replaced the old Dongdaemun Stadium and sits on historically significant ground: excavations during construction revealed Joseon-era fortifications and relics now displayed in the basement museum.
Getting to the DDP
Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station on Lines 2, 4, and 5. Exit 1 leads directly to the DDP plaza. The station name is long, but the location is central. From Myeongdong: Line 4 southbound,d one stop to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park. From Insadong: about a 15-minute walk east from Myeongdong Shopping Guide area: about a 20-minute walk northeast.
The Building and Exterior
The exterior plaza is free to walk at any time. The curved aluminum shell catches light differently throughout the day. Best photographed at dawn (rose-gold light on the panels), mid-morning (clean white under a blue sky), or at night (LED lighting beneath the overhang creates a dramatic glow). The Rose Garden below the curved roof has seasonal flowers in spring and autumn.
Museums and Exhibitions (Inside DDP)
Design Museum: Covers Korean and international design history with rotating exhibitions and a permanent collection. Entry fee varies by exhibition, typically 8,000 to 15,000 won.
Museum of Art Seoul: Hosts major international and Korean contemporary art exhibitions. Entry fee varies, often 8,000 to 12,000 won.
Dongdaemun History and Culture Museum (Underground): Free entry. Displays archaeological finds from the Joseon-era fortifications discovered during DDP construction. Interesting historical context without a ticket.
DDP Night Market (Dongdaemun DDP Market)
The DDP Night Market runs Thursday to Sunday from 7 pm to midnight in the outdoor plaza surrounding the building. About 100 stalls from young Korean designers and food vendors. Handmade accessories, fashion, ceramics, food, and craft goods. The atmosphere is lively, the prices are reasonable, and the backdrop of the Zaha Hadid building lit at night is excellent. Dongdaemun Fashion District
The surrounding Dongdaemun area is Korea’s wholesale and retail fashion hub. The cluster of large fashion malls (Doota, Migliore, Lotte Fitin, Hello APM) surrounding the DDP stay open until 5am. The market is at its most active from midnight to 4am when Korean fashion retailers come to buy wholesale stock. For tourists, the most practical daytime fashion shopping is in Doota and Lotte Fitin.
