South of the Han River and eternally associated with wealth, K-pop, and a very good song, Gangnam is Seoul’s most polished district and home to several genuinely unmissable experiences.
Gangnam-gu is the large district south of the Han River that includes the Gangnam Station area, Cheongdam-dong, Apgujeong, and Sinsa-dong. It is Seoul’s wealthiest district and home to major agencies in the Korean entertainment industry. Psy’s song put it on the global map, but the area has genuine appeal beyond the meme.
Getting to Gangnam
- Subway line 2 (green): Gangnam Station is on the busiest subway line in Korea. Directly connected to Hongdae, City Hall, and the entire central Seoul network.
- Subway line 9 (gold): Express service from Gimpo Airport and western Seoul.
- From central Seoul: Around 15 to 20 minutes from City Hall or Seoul Station by line 2.
What to Do in Gangnam
COEX Mall and Starfield Library
COEX is the massive underground shopping and entertainment complex connected to Samsung Station. The Starfield Library inside COEX is the most photographed interior in contemporary Seoul, a vast public reading space with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves rising three stories, open to everyone, no ticket required. Worth visiting even if you do not shop. The surrounding COEX complex has a cinema, an aquarium (admission 29,000 won), a casino, and hundreds of restaurants and shops.
Bongeunsa Temple
A working Buddhist temple on a forested hillside directly adjacent to COEX, the contrast of ancient temple buildings against the surrounding modern towers is one of Seoul’s most striking visual juxtapositions. Free to enter. The main hall has a 23-metre seated Buddha visible from outside the complex. Temple stay programmes are available for those who want a deeper experience.
HYBE Insight
The visitor experience museum at HYBE, the agency behind BTS, TXT, NewJeans, and others, is the essential K-pop industry destination in Seoul. SM Town at COEX
SM Entertainment’s visitor complex in the COEX building is home to EXO, aespa, NCT, SHINee, and others. Museum sections, music experience spaces, cafe, and merch store. Entry costs around 15,000 won for the museum.
Garosu-gil
A tree-lined street in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam, with Seoul’s best independent fashion boutiques, design stores, concept cafes, and some of the finest restaurants in the city. The Korean name means ‘tree-lined road’ and the ginkgo trees make it particularly beautiful in autumn—the best area in Gangnam for a slow afternoon walk, shopping, and dinner.
Cheongdam-dong and Apgujeong
The most exclusive residential and commercial areas of Gangnam. International luxury brands, Korean celebrity-favourite restaurants, and the kind of cafes where people in the Korean entertainment industry actually spend time. The character is completely different from the tourist Seoul of Myeongdong or the student Seoul of Hongdae. Worth a walk to understand the full spectrum of the city.
Where to Eat in Gangnam
Upscale Korean BBQ
Gangnam has the highest concentration of premium Korean BBQ in Seoul hanwoo domestic beef restaurants, premium galbi specialists, and table-service BBQ at a different level from neighbourhood samgyeopsal joints. Budget 40,000-100,000 won per person for the full premium experience.
Garosu-gil Restaurants
The streets around Garosu-gil have excellent mid-range Korean and international restaurants. Korean fried chicken at Kyochon Chicken, contemporary Korean cuisine at various independent restaurants, and some of the best coffee shops in Seoul.
Department Store Food Halls
The Hyundai Coex Mall food hall and the Galleria Department Store food section are among Seoul’s finest collections of prepared food, offering exceptional Korean and international dishes available to take away or eat at the counters.
Gangnam as a Base for Seoul
Gangnam is better suited to upscale travellers than to backpackers. Hotels are good but expensive. The area is farther from the main historical sights (Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong) than central Seoul-based areas.
