Hongdae (홍대, short for Hongik University) is the neighbourhood that Seoul students and young creatives consider their own. It is where the K-pop industry’s future practitioners train in dance academies, where indie bands play to small venue crowds, where the best vintage clothing in Seoul is found, and where the evening street performance and club scene is the liveliest in the city. It is also the best neighbourhood in Seoul for budget travellers.
Getting to Hongdae
- Subway line 2 (green): Hongik University Station is the most used line in Seoul, directly connecting Hongdae to Gangnam, City Hall, and Sinchon.

What to Do in Hongdae
Independent Shopping
Hongdae’s shopping scene is entirely different from the chain-dominated Myeongdong or the luxury Gangnam. Independent boutiques selling original Korean fashion, vintage clothing stores with genuine finds (particularly on the streets of Sangsu-dong just east of the main Hongdae area), record shops, art book stores, and design concept shops. The Hongdae main shopping street and the surrounding blocks repay a full afternoon of exploring.
Street Performances
On weekends, particularly on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, street performers take over designated performance zones in Hongdae. Dance crews, busking musicians, and aspiring idol trainees perform for the public. The open dance performance area features some of the most extraordinary street dance and K-pop choreography in Seoul, performed by people training for professional careers. Free, spontaneous, genuinely impressive.
Dance Academies and K-Pop Culture
Hongdae has the highest concentration of dance academies in Korea, serving as a training ground for both professional performers and enthusiastic amateurs. Cafes
Hongdae has arguably the best independent cafe culture in Seoul. The streets around Yonsei University (adjacent to Hongdae) and the Yeonnam-dong neighbourhood just north have developed an excellent cafe culture over the last decade, with specialty coffee, creative concept spaces, and places with handwritten menus and personality. Nightlife in Hongdae
Hongdae’s nightlife is Seoul’s most active. The main club strip between the main gate and Sangsoo Station features clubs specializing in K-pop, hip-hop, and electronic music. Cover charges run 10,000 to 20,000 won, including one drink. Peak hours are midnight to 3 am. Several large clubs stay open until 6 am.

Where to Stay in Hongdae
Hongdae has Seoul’s best budget accommodation infrastructure. Hostels cluster within walking distance of Hongik University Station with dorm beds from 20,000 to 30,000 won and a strong social culture.
