Four ways to get from Incheon International Airport to central Seoul. Times, costs, and the honest recommendation for each type of traveller. Incheon International Airport sits on an island 52 kilometres west of central Seoul. It is one of the world’s best-connected airports with multiple fast, affordable transport options to the city. The right choice depends on your budget, your destination in Seoul, and how much luggage you have.
Quick answer: For most travellers, the AREX Express Train to Seoul Station (43 minutes, 9,500 won). Straightforward, fast, no traffic risk. If your hotel is in Hongdae, Sinchon, or Mapo, the AREX all-stop train (66 minutes, 4,950 won) is cheaper and takes you closer. For Gangnam: A limousine bus or taxi is faster door-to-door.
Option 1: AREX Express Train (Airport Railroad Express)
The fastest public transport option. The AREX express runs non-stop from Incheon Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 directly to Seoul Station in the city centre.
- Journey time: 43 minutes from Terminal 1, 51 minutes from Terminal 2
- Cost: 9,500 won (around 9 USD) per person one way
- Frequency: Every 30 minutes
- Operating hours: 5:20 am to 11:40 pm from Incheon
- Payment: T-money card (tap in and out), credit card at the machine, or buy a single ticket at the counter. The T-money card gives a slight discount. See the T-money card guide for setup.
From Seoul Station, transfer to subway lines 1 or 4 for most destinations in central Seoul. Myeongdong is one stop on line 4. Dongdaemun is four stops on line 4.
Option 2: AREX All-Stop Train
The same AREX line, but making all intermediate stops, including Hongdae (Gongdeok), Sinchon area (Susaek), and Digital Media City.
- Journey time: 66 minutes to Seoul Station
- Cost: 4,950 won from Terminal 1, roughly half the express price
- Best for: Travellers staying in Hongdae, Mapo, Sinchon, or western Seoul. Hongdae Station (Hongik University Station) is a direct stop, eliminating the need for a subway transfer.
Pay with a T-money card or buy at the machine. The all-stop train runs more frequently than the express.
Option 3: Airport Limousine Bus
Comfortable coach buses running express routes between Incheon Airport and major Seoul districts.
- Journey time: 60 to 90 minutes, depending on destination and traffic
- Cost: Around 10,000 to 17,000 won per person, depending on the route
- Routes: Multiple routes covering Gangnam, Myeongdong, Hongdae, Sinchon, Itaewon, Jamsil, and other areas, often with stops directly outside major hotels
- Best for: Travellers with lots of luggage who want a direct drop-off near their hotel. Gangnam-bound travellers for whom the bus is often faster than train-plus-transfer.
Buy tickets at the orange Limousine Bus counters in the arrivals hall (Floors 1, Level B1). Check routes and timetables on the Airport Limousine website. Subject to traffic delays, add 30 to 45 extra minutes mentally during peak traffic hours (7 to 9 am and 5 to 8 pm).
Option 4: Taxi or Ride-Hailing
- Journey time: 60 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic and destination
- Cost: Around 55,000 to 80,000 won to central Seoul by regular meter taxi. Deluxe (black) taxis: 80,000-120,000 won.
- Best for: Groups of 3 or 4 splitting the cost (which brings the per-person cost close to the bus), very heavy luggage, and late-night arrivals when train frequency drops.
Taxis queue in designated areas in the arrivals hall. The Kakao T app works for booking from the airport. All taxis use meters, and agree on nothing extra for luggage or tolls (tolls are added to the meter automatically).
Terminal 1 vs Terminal 2
Incheon has two terminals. Terminal 2 serves Korean Air, Delta, Air France, and KLM, among others. Terminal 1 serves all other airlines. Both terminals connect to the AREX and have bus stops and taxi ranks. A free shuttle bus connects the two terminals (about 15-18 minutes). Check which terminal your airline uses before planning your exit.
Getting a T-money Card in Incheon
Buy a T-money card immediately on arrival at Incheon, available from the T-money counter in the arrivals hall (Level 1, near exit) or from GS25 convenience stores in the terminal.
