If you want to stay in Korea longer than your visa or entry permission allows, you must apply for an extension before the current permission expires. Here is how the process works.
South Korea allows visitors in certain visa categories to extend their stay without leaving the country. Tourist visa (C-3) holders and visa-exempt visitors can apply for extensions at a Korea Immigration Service office. The extension is not automatic, and there are limits on how often it can be granted.
Critical: Apply before your current permission expires. Overstaying, even by one day, is a serious immigration violation that can result in fines, detention, deportation, and a ban on future entry to Korea. Do not wait.
Who Can Apply for an Extension
Tourist visa (C-3) holders can apply for a single extension of up to 90 days beyond the original visa validity period.
Visa-exempt visitors: Citizens of countries that enter visa-free can apply for an extension if there is a genuine reason (medical treatment, family emergency, or other compelling circumstances). Extensions are not typically granted simply because you want more time for tourism.
Extensions are not automatically granted: You must have a valid reason. Simple ‘I want more time’ requests are typically declined for visa-exempt visitors and may be scrutinized for C-3 visa holders.
Where to Apply
Korea Immigration Service offices handle visa extensions. The main Seoul office is at the Mok-dong Immigration Office (목동출입국외국인사무소). Other regional offices are in Busan, Daegu, Incheon, and other major cities.
Applications can also be submitted online through HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr) in some categories. Check whether your visa type is eligible for online application before travelling to the immigration office.
Documents Required for Extension
- Passport: Valid, with the current visa and entry stamp
- Application form: Available at the immigration office or downloadable from hikorea.go.kr
- Extension fee: Around 30,000 to 60,000 won, depending on extension type
- Proof of financial means: Bank statement or equivalent showing you can fund the extended stay
- Reason for extension: Supporting documentation for the stated reason (medical certificate, flight booking showing the earliest available return, etc.)
- Accommodation proof: Hotel booking or address for the extended period
Processing Time
Same-day decisions are possible at some immigration offices for straightforward cases. Bring all documents and arrive early. Some complex cases may require follow-up. The immigration officer has discretion;n a well-prepared, politely presented application with clear documentation is significantly more likely to succeed than an unprepared one.
If Extension Is Denied
If your extension application is denied, you must leave Korea by the expiry of your current permission. Book an onward flight as a contingency before submitting the extension application. If you disagree with the denial, you can file an objection with the immigration authority, but the process is lengthy.
