Nami Island (Namiseom) is one of the most visited day trips from Seoul and one of the most divided among travellers. Some find it underwhelming, a small island with nice trees and too many visitors. Others say it is one of the most pleasant half-days they have spent in Korea. The truth depends on when you visit, what you are expecting, and whether the K-drama connection (the island became famous as a filming location for Winter Sonata in 2002) means anything to you.

Quick answer: Nami Island is best on a weekday morning outside summer peak season. It is genuinely beautiful in autumn (October to November) and spring (April to May). Summer weekends are crowded and the experience suffers. Entry costs 16,000 won including the ferry, which is reasonable for what you get.
What is Nami Island?
Nami Island is a half-moon-shaped island formed in 1944 when the Cheongpyeong Dam was built, raising the water level of the North Han River and flooding the surrounding plain. The island is named after General Nami, a Joseon Dynasty military hero whose tomb is located there.
The island is privately owned and operated as a cultural and nature park. It declared itself the ‘Republic of Naminara’ complete with its own passport stamps, currency, and postal system a quirky branding decision that has stuck and adds to its distinctive character. The island covers about 430,000 square metres and takes around 2 to 3 hours to walk thoroughly.
What to Do on Nami Island
Walk the Tree-Lined Paths
The island’s defining feature is its long, straight, tree-lined avenues of Metasequoia (dawn redwood), silver birch, ginkgo, Italian poplar, and cherry trees, each avenue distinct and at its best in a different season. The Metasequoia Path is the most photographed and most associated with Winter Sonata. In autumn, the ginkgo avenue turns bright gold. In spring, cherry blossoms arch overhead. The paths are broad, flat, and peaceful when not crowded.
The Winter Sonata Connection
The 2002 Korean drama Winter Sonata, starring Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo, was filmed partly on Nami Island and became a cultural phenomenon across Asia, credited with sparking the Korean Wave (hallyu) that has since grown into a global phenomenon. Statues of the main characters stand at the filming locations. For fans of Korean drama or the Korean Wave, this context adds a layer to the visit that non-fans will find meaningless.
Art Installations and the Naminara Republic
The island has scattered art installations, mural walls, and a small gallery throughout the grounds. The ‘Republic of Naminara’ passport stamp desk, the island’s own post office (you can mail postcards with the Naminara stamp), and the general sense of playful independent nationhood give the island a gentle quirkiness. Not everyone engages with it, but children and K-culture enthusiasts tend to enjoy it.
Cycling
Bicycles and tandems can be rented on the island for around 3,000 to 7,000 won per hour. The flat terrain makes cycling genuinely pleasant, and it is a faster way to see the full island than walking.
Wildlife
The island has a surprising amount of wildlife, including ostriches wandering freely, rabbits, squirrels, and various birds. The ostriches in particular tend to surprise visitors who were not expecting to encounter them on a Korean river island.
How to Get to Nami Island from Seoul
By public transport (recommended)
- Step 1: Take the ITX Cheongchun train from Yongsan Station or the subway to Gapyeong Station. The ITX is faster (about 70 minutes, around 3,900 won) and more comfortable. Regular subway via Line 1 and Gyeongchun Line takes about 90 minutes.
- Step 2: From Gapyeong Station, take a taxi (around 5,000 to 6,000 won, 5 minutes) or the town shuttle bus to the Nami Island ferry dock.
- Step 3: Take the ferry to the island (included in the 16,000 won entry fee, departs every 15 to 30 minutes).
Total journey time from Seoul: around 1.5 to 2 hours each way.
By an organized tour
Many Seoul tour operators run Nami Island day tours that often combine the island with Petite France and the Garden of Morning Calm. Tours typically cost 40,000 to 70,000 won, including transport and entry fees. Convenient if you want to combine multiple stops without navigating independently.
Combining Nami Island with Other Destinations
Nami Island alone makes for a half-day visit. Combining it with one or both of the following makes the journey from Seoul worthwhile:
Petite France
A French-themed cultural village about 15 minutes from the Nami Island ferry dock by taxi or shuttle. Built around a collection of French-style architecture, antiques, and art installations. Famous as a filming location for the Korean dramas My Love from the Star and Secret Garden. Entry around 12,000 won. Best visited on the same day as Nami Island.
The Garden of Morning Calm (Achim-go-yo-won)
A 30-hectare formal garden about 20 minutes from Nami Island by taxi. Open year-round, it has over 5,000 plant varieties across themed garden sections most spectacular in spring (April to May), summer (July illumination festival), and autumn (October foliage). Entry 11,000 won. A longer stop than Petite France and worth prioritizing if gardens appeal.
When to Visit Nami Island
- Spring (April to May): Cherry blossoms along the cherry avenue. One of the most beautiful times. Weekdays only to avoid crowds.
- Autumn (October to November): The ginkgo and metasequoia avenues turn gold and rust. Peak season on the island is as beautiful as spring, but expect larger weekend crowds.
- Summer (July to August): The island is green and lush, but extremely crowded on weekends. The path experience diminishes significantly with large crowds—weekday mornings only in summer.
- Winter (December to February): Quiet and peaceful. The bare trees have their own beauty. Coldest months, but very manageable with a warm coat.
Is Nami Island Worth It?
For most visitors: yes, if combined with one or two other nearby stops and visited on a weekday outside peak season. The island is genuinely beautiful, the autumn and spring visits are excellent, and the 1.5 hour journey from Seoul becomes more worthwhile when you are spending a full day in the Gapyeong area rather than just half a day on the island.
