DMZ – The Most Unique Day Trip in Asia
The Korean Demilitarized Zone, 50 to 60 kilometres north of Seoul, is one of the most genuinely unusual places accessible to tourists anywhere in the world: the Third Infiltration Tunnel, Dora Observatory, and Dorasan Station with Pyongyang on the departure board. The Joint Security Area (Panmunjom) allows you to cross the Military Demarcation Line when it is open.
- How to go: Guided tour only. Half-day from 50,000 to 70,000 won. Full-day with JSA from 100,000 to 130,000 won.

Suwon – Hwaseong Fortress
The best half-day trip from Seoul. Just 55 minutes by subway (line 1), home to Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 5.7 kilometres of walls, gates, and watchtowers built in 1796. Walking the complete walls takes about 2 hours. An entry of 1,000 won is one of the best values for UNESCO sites worldwide. Combine with Suwon galbi (short rib) for lunch.
Nami Island – Scenic River Island
A half-moon-shaped river island, 1.5 hours from Seoul, famous for tree-lined paths of metasequoia, silver birch, and ginkgo. Beautiful in spring (cherry blossoms) and autumn (ginkgo gold).
- Getting there: ITX Cheongchun from Yongsan to Gapyeong (70 minutes, 3,900 won), then taxi to the ferry dock.
- Entry: 16,000 won, including the ferry.

Incheon – Chinatown and the Waterfront
Korea’s main international gateway is home to Korea’s only Chinatown and the Gaehang historical district, with colonial architecture. Just 60 minutes by subway line 1 from Seoul. Eat jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) in Chinatown, where the dish is considered to have originated.
Gyeongju – Ancient Capital (Better Overnight)
Korea’s Silla Dynasty capital royal burial mounds, Bulguksa Temple, the oldest observatory in East Asia. Two hours by KTX from Seoul. Feasible as a day trip, but the depth genuinely rewards an overnight stay. See the Gyeongju guide.
Everland – Korea’s Best Theme Park
South Korea’s largest theme park, about 1 hour from Gangnam Station by direct shuttle. The T-Express wooden roller coaster is consistently rated among the best in Asia. Entry around 54,000 won.
