Gyeongju is 2 hours from Seoul by KTX. Korea’s ancient Silla Dynasty capital is the most historically significant stop on any southern Korea route, and is straightforward to reach.
Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Kingdom for nearly a thousand years and has one of the highest concentrations of UNESCO-listed heritage in Korea. Royal burial mounds rising from the city centre, Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, and the ancient astronomical observatory Cheomseongdae are all within easy reach of each other. Getting there from Seoul is straightforward by KTX.
Option 1: KTX (Recommended)
- Departure: Seoul Station (KTX departs frequently throughout the day)
- Arrival: Singyeongju Station, note this is outside Gyeongju city centre, about 8 kilometres west
- Journey time: Around 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes, depending on service
- Cost: Around 43,800 to 50,200 won one way, depending on seat class
- Frequency: Multiple services daily check at korail.go.kr or the Korail app
Important: The KTX arrives at Singyeongju Station, not Gyeongju Station. From Singyeongju, take a local bus (routes 60 or 61, around 30 minutes) or taxi (around 12,000 to 15,000 won, 15 minutes) into central Gyeongju. Factor this into your journey planning.
Option 2: Local Train (Budget)
- Route: Seoul Cheongnyangni Station or Suseo Station to Gyeongju Station (central, walking distance to Tumuli Park)
- Journey time: Around 3.5 to 4 hours
- Cost: Around 20,000 to 28,000 won
- Advantage: Arrives at Gyeongju Station in the city centre, no onward taxi or bus needed
The local train is significantly slower but significantly cheaper and arrives at a more convenient station. Good option for budget travellers with flexible timing.
Option 3: Express Bus
- Departure: Seoul Central City Terminal (Gangnam) or Seoul Express Bus Terminal
- Arrival: Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal in the city centre
- Journey time: Around 3.5 to 4 hours by express bus
- Cost: Around 24,000 to 28,000 won one way
The express bus is cheaper than KTX and arrives in the city center, but the journey time is roughly twice as long. Good for travellers who prefer buses or who want to save on transport.
Day Trip vs Overnight
The KTX makes Gyeongju technically feasible as a day trip from Seoul; a 2-hour round trip leaves 5 to 6 hours in the city. But Gyeongju rewards an overnight stay significantly more. The evening at Anapji Pond (pavilions reflected in still water, lit from dusk until 10 pm) is one of Korea’s most beautiful experiences and requires staying late. Bulguksa and Seokguram are best combined in a full morning without rushing.

Getting Around Gyeongju
Central Gyeongju is walkable for the main sights (Tumuli Park, Cheomseongdae, Anapji Pond). Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto can be reached by local bus (routes 10 and 11 from Gyeongju Station) or taxi.
