Gangnam covers a large area south of the Han River, and it is not one single, uniform neighbourhood. It includes several distinct sub-zones, each with its own atmosphere, transport links, hotel styles, shopping, nightlife, and dining scene.
Staying near Gangnam Station feels very different from staying around Apgujeong, Cheongdam, Samseong, or Sinsa. Some areas are better for nightlife and convenience, while others suit luxury shopping, business travel, cafés, or quieter upscale stays. Because Gangnam is spread out and traffic can be heavy, the exact hotel location matters.
Gangnam Sub-Areas for Accommodation
Gangnam Station Area (Line 2 and Sinbundang Line)
The main Gangnam Station commercial hub is the most practical and affordable accommodation area within Gangnam. Hotels here are 15 to 30 percent cheaper than the Apgujeong and COEX areas while maintaining the Gangnam address. The restaurants on the streets around Gangnam Station Exits 10 and 11 are excellent for affordable Korean lunch and dinner. This is the right choice for business travellers with Gangnam meetings and for leisure travellers who want to be in Gangnam without paying the Apgujeong premium.
Sinnonhyeon and COEX Area (Line 9)
The COEX complex, Bongeunsa temple, and the Sinnonhyeon area have the highest concentration of large international luxury hotels in Gangnam: the Grand InterContinental, JW Marriott, Park Hyatt, and the Intercontinental Coex. These are among Seoul’s finest luxury hotels, and the COEX connection provides access to the underground mall and the Starfield Library without going outside—rates: 200,000 to 500,000+ won per night at these properties.
Apgujeong and Cheongdam
The luxury residential and entertainment area of Gangnam. Smaller boutique hotels and guesthouses rather than large international chains. The nearest accommodation to the premium Korean beef restaurants and the K-pop agency cluster. Rates: 80,000 to 200,000 won per night at boutique properties.
Hotel Categories in Gangnam
Luxury (200,000 to 500,000+ won): The JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square (in the COEX area), Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas, and the Park Hyatt Seoul are Gangnam’s flagship luxury properties with full international service standards.
Upper Midrange (100,000 to 200,000 won): The Novotel Ambassador Gangnam, ibis Ambassador Gangnam, and the Lotte City Hotel Mapo in the adjacent area offer strong service and location at below-luxury prices.
Business Hotels (60,000 to 100,000 won): Several Korean chain business hotels (Metro Hotel, Gangnam stay options) offer practical accommodation at prices 30 to 50 percent below the international chains.
Is Gangnam the Right Base for You?
Gangnam makes the most sense for business travellers with Gangnam-area meetings, travellers specifically targeting premium Korean beef dining and the K-pop culture scene, or those attending events at COEX. For general Seoul sightseeing (palaces, Insadong, Myeongdong, Hongdae), a Myeongdong or Hongdae base gives better walking access to attractions at significantly lower accommodation prices. The subway connects Gangnam to the main Seoul attractions in 20 to 40 minutes regardless.

Gangnam Booking, Hotels, and Transport Notes
Gangnam is a practical base for Seoul, especially for business travel, COEX events, and airport access. Hotel prices are usually more stable year-round than in historic tourist areas, though rates can rise during major COEX trade shows and exhibitions.
The COEX and Sinnonhyeon area has the strongest cluster of luxury hotels, including Park Hyatt, Grand InterContinental, JW Marriott, and Novotel Ambassador. Availability is often better than similar high-end hotels in Myeongdong, though prices stay high.
Gangnam Station offers more midrange and business hotels and is usually slightly cheaper than the COEX zone. Apgujeong has smaller boutique stays and better access to luxury dining and K-pop industry areas, but fewer transport links.
Transport is better than Gangnam’s southern location suggests. Line 9 Express reaches Gimpo Airport in about 28 to 33 minutes, while trips toward Seoul Station for AREX connections to Incheon Airport take about 35 to 40 minutes.
